Dogs Off-leash
Cycling is not permitted in the Desolation Wilderness Area, so if you ride up, you'll have to either lock up your bike to continue on foot or head back the way that you came.
Description
This old decommissioned fire road provides access to Desolation Wilderness via the Meeks Bay Trail (aka, the Tahoe Yosemite Trail). The scenery along the way is absolutely gorgeous and includes a string of lakes with big, big rocks! As a fire road, the going is somewhat unremarkable, as you'll be running along a graded surface. While it doesn't necessarily provide a good backcountry feel, this is a necessity in terms of getting from the Meeks Bay Trailhead to an actual trail.
Local tip - when planning a day of hiking or trail running on the Meeks Bay Trail, we ride out this trail with a bike lock and lock our bikes to a tree at the trailhead. This allows us to get farther into the Wilderness on day trips, and is way, better than running three miles of flat fire road. It is suitable for cruiser bikes and dog/kid trailers. Trust me, you'll love having your bikes for an easy cruise back to the parking lot after a day of hiking or trail running here.
