Runner Notes

This trail would make a great long run as an out-and-back or in combination with the James Irvine and Friendship Ridge Trail for a 12.5-mile loop.

Description

The West Ridge Trail runs nearly the complete length of the Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway, paralleling the road as it heads from its southern trailhead near the Prairie Creek Visitor Center to its northern terminus at the Coastal Trail. Additional access points are from the Zig Zag Trail #1 and #2, the Cathedral Trees Trail, and the Butler Creek Trail.

The trail is moderately difficult with several strenuous climbs and descents, particularly at both the start and end of the trail. Once you gain the ridgeline, the trail is more rolling, still with a couple steep sections, but, overall, a lot shorter climbs/descents.

The trail travels through several breathtaking old-growth redwood groves, and even the sections where the trees aren't as impressively gigantic are still scenic in their own way.

West Ridge Trail connects with several other trails in the area, giving you the option for a variety of shorter and longer loop runs if you aren't game to tackle the full length of this seven-mile trail. If you are looking for the option for an overnight backpacking trip, two great options are possible by taking the Ossagon Trail or Miners Ridge Trail to designated camps.
