Overview

This route, part of the Discrete Peak Series, brings runners to the top of Greeley, across the high-t, up Baldy, before coming back down via Wildcat. This one run hits all of the classic ski runs at Alta that we love to ski all winter long!

Description

The race starts at the base of Albion / Sunnyside lifts (elevation 8650 ft.) and runs west along the Transfer Tow. Turn left (south) on the wood chip road that crosses Little Cottonwood Creek.

Above you are the remains of the Landis Jump Hill. Turn left (east) onto the singletrack trail. Stay on this trail and you'll come to the edge of Snake Pit with a log across the trail. Switchback to your right staying on the trail. You'll have another switchback and on your left will be able to see the old cement lift tower footing of the Lucky Boy Chairlift (1942).

You'll again come to the edge of Snake Pit with a view of the waterfalls. Dont take the trail down into Snake Pit. Turn right uphill and start climbing straight up! Above you through a gap in the willows is Greeley Hill. Keep going straight up. At the top of the Greeley Hill ridgeline start bearing slightly right to gain elevation. Ascending this ridgeline, you'll cross the top of High Nowhere, North Rustler and Eagles Nest, all to your right.

After Eagles Nest, you'll stay on a trail just off the ridgeline heading towards Greeley Pass (elevation 9850 ft.) with the green plastic carpet. Going through Greeley Pass you are now on the High Traverse heading toward the top of Collins Lift. This trail is visible until you cross the giant scree field at Sunspot. The trail can be picked up again on the other side but dont gain any elevation because the trail will be below you. Follow this trail all the way to the Collins lift and scramble up the lift line to the top of Collins (elevation 10400 ft.) There will be an aid station here.

Go south across the East Baldy Traverse towards Sugarloaf Pass (elevation 10500 ft.). Turn west and head up the ridge to the top of Mt. Baldy (elevation 11,068 ft.). Head down the northwest ridge of Mt. Baldy and come to the top of Wildcat Lift (elevation 9780 ft.).

From here turn right onto the service road and stay on it all the way past Watson Shelter (elevation 9280 ft.) Please stay on service road all the way to the bottom of Collins Lift (elevation 8530 ft.) Continue on the service road along the Transfer Tow to the finish where you started.

History & Background

A new trail running series focused on one thing, conquering peaks. Each race, starting at the base lodge of various ski resorts, will twist up the ski trails we typically slide down all winter long. You'll run, scramble, hike, and trek your way to the resorts peak before descending back down to the finish. The first one to the top of the peak wins the esteemed GoPro Peak Freak award. Once you are done competing, hang out in our vendor village, grab some dinner or a drink, and listen to live music. The post race festivities are complete with a raffle, ceremony presentation, and gear giveaways.
