Mingus Mill [Suggest Edits]

The Mingus Mill and the Mountain Farm Museum is a great stop for any visitors in the area. Located just north of the Oconalftee Visitor Center, the Mill and Museum have been meticulously restored. This area was most heavily populated a little over 100 years ago, and thanks to the protections of the National Park Service, their way of life has been preserved.

With original construction styles and a variety of buildings to explore, stopping here offers an unparalleled view into the lives of those who once farmed in the area. While some of the structures are used mainly to allow for observation, others are still working parts of the farm today. The Mingus Mill, a water-powered mill, still grinds corn and wheat, and the blacksmith shop is still in use. There is also a variety of livestock who call the area home, and visitors can learn a bit about current and past farming practices.

In addition to the historical value of the site, the area surrounding the mill and museum is quite beautiful. Visitors are encouraged to take advantage of the trails that leave from this area. The Mingus Creek Trail is a popular choice, as is the Oconaluftee River Trail. No matter how you choose to take in this historical region, you'll find that history comes to life.
